Jesus, the healer!
Jesus Heals a Paralysed Man (Matthew 9:1-8)(39)
In the first words Jesus said to the paralysed man were the words "Your sins are forgiven"! After He said this He healed the man! The order of this teaches us a great lesson! We must be careful! We need to make sure we don't just concentrate on God's power to heal physical sickness more than on his power to heal spiritual sickness in the form of sin! Jesus saw that even more than physical health, this man needed spiritual health! We all need spiritual health; and it comes only through Jesus' healing touch! That feeling of being satisfied and having purpose only comes through Jesus!
In verse 2 Matthew tells us Jesus saw their faith; The faith of his friends in bringing him to Christ! He was paralysed so he could not come to Christ himself so he was carried. We can learn from this! In this life those who may seem lame or are extremely sinful may be brought to Christ, and they will not be rejected by him! Now their faith was, first of all, A strong faith! They firmly believed that Jesus Christ both could and would heal him; else they would not have brought the sick man to him so publicly, and through so much difficulty they would of been through to carrying Him to Jesus! Secondly they showed a humble faith! Even though the sick man was unable to walk, they would not ask Christ to come to him, but they brought him to Jesus. Finally they showed an active faith: in the belief of Christ’s power and goodness, they brought the sick man to him, lying on a bed, which would of been difficult! Take a Note! Lets have a strong faith! A strong faith strives through suffering in seeking Jesus!
He knows our thoughts!
Some of the teachers of the law thought Jesus was blaspheming! The religious leaders rightly saw that Jesus was claiming to be God! What they didn't realise is that He is God and had the authority to heal and forgive sins! It is interesting that Jesus charged them with it. Even though they didn't say it out load, Jesus knew their thoughts. This teaches us that Jesus has the perfect knowledge of all that we say within ourselves. Thoughts are secret and sudden to humans, however they are open before Christ! Look at Jesus' response(v4)! This teaches us that there is a great deal of evil in sinful thoughts, which is very offensive to the Lord Jesus! He is displeased with them. The sins that begin and end in the heart, and go no further, are as bad as any other!
Do you walk your talk?
It's easy to tell someone his sins are forgiven; but lets be honest its a lot more difficult to remove the disability from a paralytic! Jesus backed up his words by healing the man's legs! Jesus actions showed that his words were true! He had the power to forgive as well as to heal! Talk is cheap! Its easy to talk all day about things, but our words lack meaning if our actions do not back them up! We can say we love God or others, but if we are not taking steps to demonstrate that love, our words are empty and meaningless! Think about yourself; do you just talk the talk or do you walk it? Do you just say your a Christian in words? How well do your actions back up what you say?
Give God Glory!
Lets finish by looking at the impression this made upon those there(v8); They marvelled, and glorified God. They glorified God for what he had done for this poor man. Note; We should praise God not just for what He does for ourselves but what He does for others as well! We should give him thanks for them as we are all members of one body! God must be glorified in everything! All the power that is given to men to do good is from God! For all power is originally his! Lets praise God for what he does; which is so much! But the greatest thing, is sending Jesus Christ to die on the cross! So our sins can be forgiven! What a saviour! Give God praise!
